Reflection: A DJ Manifests Doktor Sleepless

On April 22, 2008, a California DJ & media manipulator named Ure Thrall announced an upcoming manifestation of Doktor Sleepless, to occur first during the 4/23 edition of "No Other Radio Network", with a live show later that week at Oakland's Ruby Room. Thrall's announcement stated the intention to "BRING the good DOKTOR into OUR world so we can do our part to let everyone know that the FUTURE is happening RIGHT F**KING NOW, baby!"[1]

Warren Ellis's reaction was: "I am, of course, absolutely gobsmacked. The bastard’s gotten loose in the outside world."[2]

The "No Other Radio Network" program is broadcast Tuesday nights at midnight on KPFA (94.1FM) in Berkeley, CA. The program is a "bastion of expression for a long line of new and otherwise unaired Industrial, Experimental, Concreté (sic) and Ambient Music". KPFA streams all episodes of the show through its archives, although the episodes are listed under Wednesday (morning) shows instead of Tuesday (evening) shows.

Thrall, manifesting the Doktor Sleepless persona, is a semi-regular guest host on the show, with roughly monthly appearances beginning in December of 2007, as himself, before adopting the persona in January of 2008.

In June, Thrall announced another manifestation slated for July 7, which would "debut the DOKTOR SLEEPLESS REALITY CZECH series of Public Cervix Announcements"[3] -- the announcement stated this would include readings from the comic. The announcement got the date wrong -- July 7 was a Monday, while live listeners would have tuned in on Tuesday July 8, and those listening to KPFA archives would find it under Wednesday July 9 -- but Thrall's next appearance would be pushed back a week to July 16.

Thrall appeared as himself in many of the show's August and September 2008 episodes in promotion of a local industrial music festival[4], dropping the Doktor Sleepless persona during most of those shows. It is unknown if he will return to the persona in future appearances now that the festival has passed.
