Generic slang terminology describing a technological body modification. A punk-esque subculture, grinders, has arisen that practices an extreme, DIY form of this, but the concept, if not the fashion and slang, may be attractive to a wide variety of people. It is unknown if the slang first described the technology, or the subculture.
Shriekyware might be considered a more cosmetic branch of this technology tree.
A simple example grind might be a personal weather station built into a piece of jewelry. (This, like shriekyware, is more cosmetic than bodymod, although it could depend on what sort of jewelry is used.) The entire system might use a small sonde (for temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors), a power supply (if needed), and an RFID module. Sensor readings could be transmitted to a laptop, cellphone, or IM lens for display.
Grind-style technology might also be found in amputees and biomedical devices, though what might be installed in a hospital would initially lack the grinder's DIY edge. Naturally, once installed, any such technology that transmits could be monitored, and any that accepts wireless control could be hacked and tweaked (or outright repurposed) at the grinder's whim.
But the grinders seem to be from lower economic classes, so their non-emergency grinds are likely self-funded, executed with inexpensive off-the-shelf components jury-rigged to perform the desired function. Due to this hobbyist approach, grinds among the grinders have been known to malfunction and cause injury to the user/wearer/installee.
