An opiate-replacement therapy, presumably used to get the subject off drugs.

Works by implantation of an algae culture that feeds its substitute chemical into the brain. Induces a cellular coma - "plant time". Patients undergoing the therapy take much longer than normal humans to notice major changes in their environment. This can include failing to notice the death of a loved one for several days, as one character describes in Doktor Sleepless And The Return To Scartop Mountain.
