666

The number 666 [1] recurs in a number of contexts.

• It is the contact number for ProLifeLine.
• It appears in the Grinder symbol, which also appears in a tattoo on Doktor Sleepless' back.
• A recent theory, based on Jewish numerology, is that the 666 in The Revelation to John (aka Revelation) possibly refers to the Roman Emperor Nero, best known for his madness, as well as allowing Rome to burn to make room for a larger palace. Is it possible that John Reinhardt will let Heavenside "burn" to usher in his new world?

This is not a "recent" theory of 666--it's in Robert Graves's chapter of The White Goddess "The Number of the Beast"; another possibility: Domitian Caesar, based on the use of Roman numerals: DCLXVI (short for Domitian Caesar basely killed the envoys of Christ, in Latin).

It is also interesting to note that the belief of "Nero as 666" is often a central belief of Preterist eschatology.

In the Bible 666 is referred to as the number of the Beast, which is also the number of "a man" (Revelation 13:18).

Also remember "The Beast" from Transmetropolitan . . .

The oldest known record of the verse, a fragment of an early manuscript of Revelation from the Oxyrhynchus site, Papyrus 115, gives a different number, 616.
