'Saturn's Children' by Charles Stross - crossover event?

I'm pretty sure it isn't an official crossover, but...
Charlie Stross has a new book out. Among the many shadowy conspirators in this tale is a renegade 'black laboratory' operator called... Doctor Sleepless. (Yes, that spelling rather than Doktor.)
I know Warren and Charlie are acquainted, so I wonder how much of a hat-tip this is. (For example, there's also a museum in the book seemingly named after John Scalzi...)
Something to amuse us until issue 8 at least! Besides, it's a fun book - assuming you're up for a rollicking space opera heavily in homage to late-period sex-and-philosophy Heinlein...

- Does Warren know about this?

- given he talked about reading this ages ago, then i'd have to say yes
- now, if we can just organise a Stross vs Ellis battle of the Sleepless.. moderated by Shaviro!

- I'd imagine it's a homage. I mean, there's that spot in Accelerando where the introductory guide mentions that if you believe you're the physical manifestation of a fictional character, such as Spider Jerusalem then you should speak to the administration immediately.

- Good point, nicely spotted.

- No problem. Accelerando is available for free online if you can stand to read off screens.
- I think it helped that in my mind that was followed by "friend computer" asking the fictional character to please report to the reclamation vats for recycling.

- Oh yeah, I have it on my PDA, among many other ebooks - I've just not re-read it in a while.

- they all love their homages i think.
- Cory Doctorow's uploaded lobsters in his short-story "I, Row-Boat" (his awesome sequel to his take on "I, Robot") being a nod to Accelerando
Return to Secret Tangents.
